From the recording It's Never Too Late

I studied piano, then harpsichord, but always wanted to play the guitar. This song is about finally picking up the guitar I was given as a gift and learning to play -- at age 58. Two and a half years later, after many lessons and daily practice, I wrote this song.

I hope it inspires you to just get out there and do it. After all, "the youngest you'll be is how old you are now!"

It's Never Too Late
Lyrics and Music © Maria Verven

It's never too late to start something new
Play the guitar or wear a new 'do
The youngest I'll be is how old I am now
There's no guarantees and no sacred cows

Refrain
No more waiting for my life to begin
No more pining for what might have been

People get stuck or don't they mind it that way?
Down in their ruts where they tend to stay
The same old grind is a trap that they built
It's in their own minds from sloth or from guilt

Refrain
No more waiting for my life to begin
No more pining for what might have been

My path in this life has never been straight
Struggles and strife have made me afraid
Finally one day, though riddled with pain
Tired of waiting, I started to play

Guitar on the shelf for all of those years
Surprising myself, it brought me to tears
Let loose the beast that was lurking inside
I pray it won't cease 'til the day that I die

Refrain
No more waiting for my life to begin
No more pining for what might have been
No more waiting for my life to begin
No more pining for what might have been
